Winter holidays with babies and toddlers: tips from a mum

How to enjoy a winter holiday with a baby or toddler

A winter holiday with a baby or toddler – sounds like a challenge? It doesn’t have to be! With the right preparation and a holiday resort that specialises in families, your winter holiday will be surprisingly uncomplicated and truly relaxing. As a mother of two sons, I know how important it is for children to be happy and parents to be relieved. That’s exactly why I want to show you why Hofgut Wagrain is the perfect choice for your family holiday in the mountains.

1. A hotel resort that truly understands the needs of families

When going on a winter holiday with little ones, thoughtful details count. Hofgut Wagrain offers spacious apartments with several bedrooms – ideal for any family constellation, whether with a family of friends or together with grandparents. The baby service package with cot, changing mat, baby monitor and many other useful extras ensures that you have to bring less with you and can enjoy more space for time together and relaxing moments of retreat. Find out more about our apartments and offers here.

Prams, hiking carriers, sledges, baby carriers and rucksacks are available free of charge at the Hofgut reception.

2. Skiing with babies and toddlers

I still remember the moment when my boys stood on skis for the first time – a little wobbly, but with huge smiles on their faces. At Wagrainis Winterwelt, located at the middle station of the Rote 8er lift, we had the perfect setting for this special moment: a magic carpet, rope tow, play carousels and even an igloo to explore. The dwarf house was particularly helpful for us, as we could warm up there in between runs. And the children’s day with a campfire on Thursdays was always a highlight for us.

A ski school is highly recommended. The ski instructors in Wagrain teach children the basics of skiing in a playful manner and with a lot of patience. In a group, the little ones not only learn faster, but also have a lot of fun with their peers. For us parents, this was a great relief – because, to be honest, it can be quite challenging to give your children their first skiing lessons yourself.

The best part? At Hofgut Wagrain, you can hire all your ski equipment directly on site at the Obermoser ski hire shop – no need for advance planning or long journeys. This way, you can start your day on the slopes relaxed and full of anticipation.

3. Practical tips for a relaxed winter holiday with little ones

A winter holiday with babies and toddlers requires a little planning to ensure stress-free days for everyone. Based on feedback from our guests, here are a few tips that always prove useful:

  • Daily planning: Plan your day so that active periods in the snow are interspersed with plenty of breaks. Childcare for little ones in the morning is particularly practical if they are still too young to ski. This allows parents to enjoy a short break in the ski resort.
  • Weatherproof clothing: Overalls, warm boots and waterproof gloves are essential, as is a change of clothes – especially with little ones, it’s rare for everything to stay dry.
  • Snow fun: Classic activities such as making snow angels or building snowmen are always popular with children. You don’t need to bring things like sledges, toboggans or shovels with you – they are all available to hire free of charge at the Hofgut to save space in your luggage.

4. Alpine hut recommendations for families with babies and non-skiers

Even if the little ones are still too young to ski or some members of the family would rather not hit the slopes, there are many cosy huts that are easily accessible by gondola, even without skis:

  • Grafenbergalm (Grafenberg): The Grafenbergbahn cable car takes you right to the top. From there, it’s only a few steps to the hut.
  • Gipfelstadl and Kogelalm (Flying Mozart): The Flying Mozart gondola takes you comfortably to the top. Both huts are located about 30 metres to the side of the slope and are also accessible to non-skiers – provided you are sure-footed and equipped with good footwear.
  • Edelweissalm or Franzlalm (Rote 8er middle station): These two huts are located right next to Wagrainis Winterwelt, making them perfect for families. Here, grandparents can play with the children while the rest of the family goes skiing, then meet up for lunch together.

If your family is already confident on skis, there are of course many more opportunities to discover the mountain cuisine in Wagrain-Kleinarl. You can find an overview of all huts in the region here.

5. Popular excursions with toddlers in winter

The most popular winter activities for families with small children include:

Winter horse-drawn sleigh ride
Alpaca hike in winter
Snowtubing
Winter hikes

A winter holiday with a baby or toddler doesn’t have to be complicated – with a little preparation and the right conditions, it can be a relaxing and rewarding time for the whole family.
